What is an Infusion Nurse?

An Infusion Nurse (or Intravenous Nurse, IV Nurse) specialises in administering parenteral fluids, blood & blood components, pharmacological agents, nutritional solutions and pain medications.

They work in hospitals, home care, hospices, primary care centers and in some cases large GP surgeries. They are RGNs and often pursue additional degrees and certifications. The CRNI, or Certified Registered Infusion Nurse, is certification that has been used in North America for over 20 years and is now becoming available internationally. Many nursing jobs will require the completion of specific IV courses and assessments depending on the speciality and the medical institution. In most community or home medical positions in the USA nurses will need to have a CRNI qualification or an equivalent competency level. To become a CRNI one must have a minimum level of infusion experience and pass a standardised competency exam.

CRNI, Certified Registered Nurse Infusion: To learn more about certification requirements, guidelines and recertification testing, please join our INS website.
